Questions and Expectations

One thing I've noticed about questioning in the classroom is that when a teacher leaves room for too much interpretation in a question when it comes to directions or expectations, students either respond with confusion or don't respond at all. For instance, I've seen teachers (myself included) ask "does anyone want to share what they wrote?" and be greeted with crickets. However, when I reframe the question to ask "let's have someone share" or "who is going to share what they wrote?", students are more likely to respond because clear expectations are baked into the question.
